No · it is a simulation built from real statistics. Each flash is generated mathematically from a country's population and its crude birth and death rates, not from any live record of actual events. The pattern and pace are realistic; the individual flashes are not real people.

Where do the numbers come from?

The crude birth and death rates come from the UN World Population Prospects, combined with each country's population. The page links to the source.

Why do some countries barely flash?

A country lights up in proportion to its population times its birth or death rate. A country of a few million simply has far fewer births and deaths than one of a billion, so it flashes much less often · just like reality.

What does "net change" mean?

It is births minus deaths since you opened the page · the natural population change before migration. Worldwide it stays strongly positive, because births outnumber deaths.

Does it work offline?
