What we collect

PlayMemorize operates in two modes:

• Without an account (default): No registration is required. We collect basic, non-identifying technical usage data as described below, and your game progress is stored locally on your device.
• With an account (optional): When you sign in with your email address, we store your email address and an account identifier to authenticate you and sync your game progress across devices. Authentication uses one-time verification codes sent to your email; we do not store passwords.

We may also process:

• Feedback reports: If you voluntarily send feedback, we receive your message and any screenshot you choose to attach.
• Technical diagnostics: Coarse technical error reports and testing records needed to resolve bugs and evaluate performance.

We do not collect payment card information, precise GPS location, or biometric data.

Usage analytics

To understand general site activity, detect technical issues, and improve our educational games, we collect technical and aggregate usage data. For first-time visitors, an anonymous identifier may be stored on your device to measure returning visitors without identifying individuals. This first-party measurement remains strictly within PlayMemorize systems and is not shared for cross-site tracking or advertising. You can opt out at any time via the consent banner, the Cookie Settings link in the footer, or through browser privacy signals like Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track.

This technical usage data may include:

• Approximate geographic area (coarse country or region derived from temporary IP lookup, without storing full IP addresses in connection with your activity).
• Device and browser characteristics (device category, operating system, browser type, screen dimensions, language, and timezone).
• Referral source and page engagement metrics (such as visited pages, reading scroll depth, and interaction counts).
• Aggregated game outcomes (such as game played, completed rounds, score, and difficulty).

Legal bases under GDPR:

• Legitimate interest (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)): First-party audience measurement and technical diagnostics necessary to operate, secure, and maintain the service, subject to your right to opt out at any time.
• Consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)): Third-party analytics (Google Analytics) and third-party advertising (Google AdSense), which load only if you provide prior opt-in consent on our banner.

Account data

If you create an account, we store:

• Your email address, used to identify your account and deliver authentication codes.
• Account creation and last active timestamps.
• A secure session token stored in an httpOnly cookie on your device to keep you signed in.

You can delete your account and associated data at any time using the “Delete account” button on your /me page or by emailing hello@playmemorize.com.

Communications

When you request a sign-in code, your email address is processed by our transactional email service provider to deliver the code. If you optionally choose to receive our newsletter or email updates, you may unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email or on your account page. We do not sell or rent your email address.

Your practice progress

Detailed game progress, streaks, and settings are saved to your browser local storage. This detailed data stays on your device unless you sign in, in which case it syncs to your account so it follows you across devices.

Data retention

We retain personal information only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this policy, provide our services, maintain security, and comply with legal requirements:

• Account data: Retained for the duration of your active account. When you delete your account, personal account records are removed or anonymized.
• Usage and diagnostic logs: First-party analytics and technical logs are retained for standard operational periods necessary to analyze trends and troubleshoot errors, after which they are deleted or permanently aggregated into non-identifying summary statistics.
• Local device storage: Game progress, preferences, and local cookies remain on your device until you clear your browser cache or storage.

Your rights

Depending on your jurisdiction (such as under the GDPR or CCPA/CPRA), you have rights regarding your personal information, including the right to:

• Access and receive a copy of your personal data.
• Request correction of inaccurate personal data.
• Request deletion of your personal data.
• Object to or restrict our processing of your personal data, or withdraw previously given consent.
• Opt out of non-essential tracking at any time using the Cookie Settings link in our footer.

Cookies

We use essential cookies and browser storage to keep you signed in, remember your preferences, and record your consent choices. Third-party cookies for analytics or advertising are set only if you grant consent. The Cookie Policy lists every item with its purpose.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand aggregate usage. Google Analytics sets cookies and collects data including device information and page views under Google's privacy policy. Google Analytics loads only after you accept the consent banner. To turn it off again, use the Cookie Settings link in the footer and choose “No thanks”. You can also install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Third-party service providers

We work with trusted service providers who process data on our behalf under confidentiality and data protection obligations:

• Hosting and infrastructure: Cloud hosting, serverless compute, and database providers that securely host our application and data.
• Email delivery: Transactional email service providers to deliver sign-in codes and service messages.
• Third-party analytics and advertising (with consent): Google Analytics 4 for aggregate usage insights, and Google AdSense for optional display advertising to non-signed-in visitors who grant consent. Signed-in accounts are ad-free.

Children

PlayMemorize is suitable for all ages. If you are under the age of digital consent in your country, please do not create an account without parental consent. Contact us to delete any account created without consent.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a material way we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the site after any change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
